February 19, 2019 -- Trustees conducted a public hearing regarding Amarillo ISD’s Annual Report for 2017-2018.  This comprehensive report includes the state-issued Texas Academic Performance Report, as well as reports regarding District financial status, criminal incidents, student performance in post-secondary institutions and campus performance objectives.  The complete 2017-2018 AISD Annual Report is available on our website in our State Required Postings section at this link. Board members reported on their scheduled visits to campuses for the month and Trustee Jim Austin reported on continuing negotiations with the City to provide a safer pedestrian crossing option across 34th St. from the main Caprock High School campus to the new tennis center/sports complex. 

The Board approved construction documents and authorized the bidding process to begin for two different bond packages, totaling about $19 million.  These two projects include work at Bonham Middle School, the Amarillo Area Center for Advanced Learning, and 21 elementary schools.  Work at almost all these schools will include bullet-resistant glass installation, plumbing/sewer line replacement and site drainage improvements.  Bonham Middle School and Rogers, Sleepy Hollow, Western Plateau and Windsor elementary schools will also receive drop-off improvements and Sleepy Hollow is getting a four-classroom addition.

In other business, the Board approved a contractor for asbestos abatement related to the bond construction/renovation project currently underway at Fannin Middle School.  Trustees also engaged in a discussion with Interim Superintendent Doug Loomis about Board and administration responsibilities, policies, and processes related to hiring, resignations, grievances, and other employment matters.   

The Board accepted gifts and donations totaling $2,334, given to various schools this month from Covenant Presbyterian Church, Jack and Darla Carthel, Amarillo Association of Realtors, Happy State Bank, Hilltop Senior Citizens and UIL Region 1.
