September 18, 2017 - The September Board meeting began with a presentation from Lavin Architects about plans and designs for a construction project to include the addition of 12 classrooms, as well as a secured entrance, window replacements, code upgrades, restroom refurbishment, and new lighting at Fannin Middle School. The estimated $10 million project will accommodate enrollment growth and accomplish a needed renovation of an aging school.
The Board celebrated AISD’s score of 100 and a ‘Superior’ rating on the 2017 Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST) Annual Management Report. Superintendent Dana West reported that AISD schools received a total of 133 academic distinctions in the 2016-17 state accountability rating system, and all 55 schools ‘met standard.’ No schools received a rating of ‘improvement required.’
Dr. West reported that, as a result of AISD’s new “1:1 Device Initiative,” all high school students will be issued a tablet to use at school and at home and, beginning with the class of 2021, students will be able to keep their device when they graduate. She also updated the Board on a labor-intensive project, required by the Office of Civil Rights, to make the AISD website accessible.
In other business, trustees approved the District Improvement Plan goals and objectives for 2017-2018 and also the annual Campus Improvement Plan objectives for all 55 campuses. The Board approved a list of community-based activities that can substitute for middle school PE requirements, and they created a City Relations Board Committee to serve in a liaison capacity between the District and the City of Amarillo.
Finally, trustees accepted gifts and donations totaling $16,097.20, given to various schools this month from Tascosa Road Fellowship Church, Farmers Insurance and agent Ashlee Pillow, Happy State Bank, Tres Bubbas, Inc., Bruckner Truck Sales, Inc., the NJROTC Booster Club, Kenneth Worsham, Margaret Mehringer, and Allen’s TriState Mechanical. Other donors are the Gilliland Foundation, Historic Route 66 on 6th St., Thomas E. Creek VA Hospital, the Paramount Terrace Elementary Parent Teacher Council, the Amarillo Association of Realtors, Cry Baby Ink, South Georgia Baptist Church, and Amarillo Stat Care.
