Superintendent’s Scholars Make Strides in Academia

With nearly 15 percent more Amarillo ISD high school students receiving the honor of Superintendent’s Scholar this year than last, it is evident students are excelling in academia and truly preparing themselves for success beyond high school. Of the 619 students who received the honor this year, 53 students received the distinction each of the eight semesters of their high school career.

Superintendent Rod Schroder explains, “Earning the Superintendent’s Scholar status is certainly an achievement for one semester, but to maintain that level of academic focus all for four years of high school is truly a distinction. These seniors have shown remarkable discipline and are on a path for future success.”

Each semester, high school students have the opportunity to become Superintendent’s Scholars through a unique program offered in AISD to honor high achieving students. Awarded once for each fall and spring semester, these scholars receive a token of appreciation for their hard work and participate in a special assembly. Students earning a 95 grade average in regular and a 90 average in pre-AP and AP courses, for at least five classes, are eligible for this honor.

Those students, who receive the honor in the fall and spring semester or who are eight semester scholars, are invited to attend a special luncheon in their honor to close out their school year of academic achievement.

The recognition of being named a Superintendent’s Scholar is an understandable measure of academic success on resumes and college applications. With about 700 high school students receiving this honor each semester, it is an accomplishment students should be proud of.
